Houghton Lake Fishing Report

By Ken • March 20th, 2010

An electro-fishing survey conducted last fall on Houghton Lake shows studies over the last few years show good natural reproduction of walleye, according to Fisheries Biologist Rich O’Neal.

Because of the spread of VHS virus there will be no stocking of walleye in Houghton Lake this season. The DNRE will continue to develop a reliable disinfection technique so the planting of walleye can resume. O’Neal claims that when stocking resumes the fish will be marked to determine how much walleye stocking is needed.

Fishermen are reporting smaller northern pike being caught, this is probably due to a couple of really strong years of larger northern pike. The population of walleye and pike are stable and with time Houghton Lake will continue to produce bigger fish in a few years.

O’Neal also said that there is no immediate plans to change the regulation on northern pike in Houghton Lake.
