AuSable River Real Estate

The historical and magnificent AuSable River flows through diverse ecosystems, extensive wildlife, pristine forests and stunning panoramic landscapes and is one of Michigan’s most prized assets. World class trout fishing, tubing, kayaking, canoeing, hiking and backpacking along its shores are just some of the recreational opportunities the river offers. Many events, including fundraising activities, sporting events and family vacations take place on the AuSable every year.

This gorgeous water trail was just been awarded winner of Michigan’s DNR “Top Water Trails” contest for 2015, as the most popular destination for people who enjoy Michigan’s outdoor adventures. That’s a pretty big honor since Michigan is home to 20% of the world’s fresh water and plenty of competition exists. Michigan is home to over 3,000 miles of coastline and thousands of additional miles of rivers streams and inland lakes, yet many feel the AuSable River is the best of all.

If you love to fly fish, there is no better place than the clear cold waters of the AuSable River to catch trout. There is a well-known nine mile section of the river that is so perfect for fly fishing, fishermen have nicknamed it “The Holy Waters.” It is regulated by year-round fly-fishing only and catch-and-release only. The AuSable is loaded with trout, with an estimated 100 pounds of wild trout per acre that are just waiting to be caught. The reason for the abundance of trout is not only the perfect environment of clean, cool fresh water but the area is filled with the bugs that are the main staple of a trout’s diet.

The area along the river draws thousands of people every year seeking the best in outdoor recreation as well as those hoping to enjoy the peaceful life that living in one of the many small and tranquil towns along the river allows. Properties in surrounding towns are in demand and highly desirable. Cities and towns along the river include Grayling, Lewiston, Lovells, Mio, Oscoda, Roscommon and more.

Grayling is one of the larger and more populated cities along the river and is centrally located and easily accessible by Michigan freeways. Because of its easy access, it’s often referred to as Michigan’s “Gateway to the North”. Graylingis also known as the “Canoe Capital of the World” and has hosted the popular Ausable River Canoe Marathon for nearly 70 years. The event takes place every July. The Marathon is a fast-paced, non-stop grueling 120 mile race that begins in Grayling and empties into Lake Huron. The race draws hundreds of competitors from all over the country and beyond and is designed for athletes in top physical condition who are experts at paddling. The contestants must endure the scorching heat of the summer as well as paddle through the stump-filled waters. Portions of the race take place in total darkness which presents racers with just one more challenge to overcome. The race is a fun annual tradition for the participants as well as the friendly town folk who come out to cheer them on.

Grayling isn’t just popular for fishing and canoeing though. The area offers thousands of acres of forests that are prime hunting grounds for deer hunters and also those who enjoy the secluded and often challenging hiking and biking trails. Grayling is also home to some of the best cross country skiing in the world. The area is just below what is considered Michigan’s Snow Belt and the winters can be long. The snow season starts in early fall and remains though late spring. There are two options right in the city at Hartwick Pines State Park and Mason Tract Pathway.

The cities along the AuSable River offer quaint shopping districts where you can find anything from a homestyle meal to unique gift items. People who live, work and play in these northern communities will tell you that if you’re looking for nature at its best within a warm and welcoming community, living in any one of the towns along the AuSable River may be just the place for you.

The AuSable River is part of everyday life for residents who live in the many communities located along its banks. The AuSable River begins in Otsego County, in Frederic Township, as a tiny trickle and continues, getting wider and faster along the way, for 138 miles, winding its way through Northern Michigan until it eventually empties into Lake Huron in Tawas, Michigan.

Whether you are looking for the peace and solitude offered by properties along its South or East branches or looking for the convenience and fun of living on the main branch, it is easy to see why AuSable Riverfront properties are so prized in Northern Michigan.
