In Roscommon County there are 54 lakes ranging from less than an acre to nearly 20,000 acres. Three of the most popular lakes to own on right now in Roscommon are Houghton Lake, Higgins Lake and Lake St. Helen, each with their own unique features and benefits.

The largest of these is Houghton Lake at 19,600 acres. Houghton Lake is so large it actually encompasses four different counties and is Michigan’s largest inland lake. Houghton Lake offers some of the best outdoor recreational activities in Northern Michigan. Houghton Lake is known for great fishing as well as kayaking, canoeing, boating, jet skiing, tubing, swimming, and sunbathing.  The fun doesn’t stop in the winter either. Tip Up Town has become a winter activity that the entire family can enjoy. Thousands of people from all over Michigan and surrounding states come out to partake in the festivities.  From fishing contests to three-legged races to pie eating contests to the beer tents, the activities for adults and children are endless. The event has been going on for over 20 years and takes place the last two weekends in January. Tip Up Town has grown so much in popularity that it is now considered to be one of the top ten festivals in the country, attracting upwards of 14,000 people each year.

Higgins Lake has been called the 6th most beautiful lake in the world and homes for sale on this lake range from quaint cottages to luxury homes.  This 9,900 acre recreational Lake in Roscommon County is the 10th largest lake in Michigan. It is known for its cool, clear and deep waters that are as deep as 135 feet at some points.  Named after Sylvester Higgins, the lake is a favorite among fishermen and brimming with perch, trout, pike and smelt.  Fishing on Higgins Lake goes on in every season and in the winter ice fishermen can be spotted dotting the frozen lake, fishing out of their shanties.  Two state parks along Higgins Lake provide camping, hiking trails, boat launches and sandy beaches.

At 2,400 acres, Lake St. Helen is the smallest of the three most popular public access lakes in Roscommon. Lake St. Helen supplies the headwaters for the famous South Branch of the AuSable River.  Also a popular fishing lake, Lake St. Helen is filled with bass, bluegill, trout, perch, pike, rainbow trout and walleye, but the type of fish you will catch depends on the area of the lake that you are fishing on. One of Lake St. Helen’s favorite annual events is the Bluegill Festival held in the summer.

These three lakes are the largest and busiest but if you prefer a smaller lake, Roscommon County has dozens more lakes with homes that range from small starter homes to cozy cottages to high end luxury lakefront homes.
